Insights from Digital Dealer: Search Plays a Critical Role for Auto Buyers Looking For a New Vehicle

This week at the Digital Dealer Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas, I gave a presentation on how search plays a critical role for auto buyers who're looking for a new vehicle and the opportunities their online research presents to our advertisers.

Over the last year, my team has worked to develop a framework to illustrate how a consumer who is considering a new vehicle purchase moves through our digital ecosystem by leveraging our digital properties to entertain, consider, research and finally narrow down the dealers to get to their final purchase.

Based on this framework, there are five key stages through which the auto consumer goes from research to ownership:

I have posted the findings from this study with an explanation of these five stages and how you can leverage the associated insights to develop the right experiences and paid search strategies to drive potential customers to your company’s site.

Reviewing the presentation below will help you...

  1. Understand the beliefs, behaviors, actions and different paths consumers take when buying a new car.
  2. Discover how digital technology is disrupting conventional autos shopping behavior.
  3. Identify consumer influences, triggers and emotions at each step along the path to purchase.
  4. Learn why search advertising is a critical enabler at each stage of the path to purchase.
  5. Acquire essential research and strategies to improve the performance of your PPC campaigns.

I hope this information will help explain the value in leveraging search as part of your online marketing mix so you can attract potential customers who are actively searching for their perfect car, bringing them to your web site just as they near their purchase decision.

If you have any questions or feedback about any of the information in this post or in the slides above, please feel free to leave them in the "Comments" section below.

Here Comes the Surge in Search Traffic Volume for the Wireless Industry – Are You Prepared?

September is a big month for advertisers in the Wireless Industry. Whether you are a carrier, a device maker, or in the business of selling services, devices and accessories – September is a great month to take advantage of the surge in searches to drive leads.

The anticipation of new devices brings a high volume of searches on the Yahoo Bing Network during September leading up to the holidays. To help you stand out from the competition, we gathered research and studied historical search patterns to highlight areas that you should consider as part of your search strategy.

A quick snapshot of what we learned:

  • Smartphone adoption has increased to 56% from 46% in Feb last year with room to grow in key segments
  • Price is a top factor among 70% consumers considering devices and plans
  • Tablet adoption is on the rise; 24% increase since April last year among parents with children
  • Historical events and data indicate that volume can be up to  300% higher on days of new product announcement
  • Most advertiser budgets are quickly exhausted during September due to high volume – budgeting properly is key to ensure campaigns don’t get paused

We hope you take advantage of these insights to optimize your strategy through September and moving forward.  We encourage you to use the historical trends to determine your strategy for other device launches, and we will continue to provide new insights on this topic throughout the peak season.
